Common problems & what to inspect
Based on 4 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2006 Buick allure, here are the most-reported problem areas — and exactly what to check before you buy.
🔍 Confirm all headlights, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights work, with no moisture inside the housings.
🔍 Steering should be tight and centered — no play, clunks or wandering. Test at low and highway speed; listen for power-steering whine.
🔍 Inspect for rust, fresh undercoating, mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps and any sign of prior collision or frame repair.
🔍 Sniff for fuel odor, check for leaks, hard starts or stalling, and confirm the fuel gauge reads correctly.
🔍 Have a trusted mechanic inspect this system as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title — they must be identical.
- Cold-start the engine; listen for knocks and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.
- Test-drive through all gears at low and highway speed — no slipping, shudder or pulling.
- Confirm every warning light clears at startup (none should stay on).
- Check fluids — oil, coolant, transmission — for level, color and leaks.
- Look underneath for rust, fresh undercoating or signs of collision repair.
- Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING
DRIVING ALONG AT 8:30 PM ( DARKNESS) AND LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF. HIGH BEAMS WORKED, NO LOW BEAM. VERY DANGEROUS. I TRIED THE MANUAL SWITCHES AND COULD NOT GET THE LOW BEAMS TO TURN ON. HAD TO DRIVE WITH HIGH BEAMS TO GET HOME.
NHTSA ODI #11030583STEERING
AS I WAS ENTERING AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE FREEWAY, BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE SPEED, FOR SOME REASON I PULLED BACK ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND DISCOVERED THE TILT WAS NOT WORKING AND THE ENTIRE STEERING WHEEL ALONG WITH THE COLUMN PULLED BACK NEARLY SIX INCHES, AS IF WOULD DETACH.
NHTSA ODI #10762621STRUCTURE
THE PASSENGER DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. THE ELECTRIC LOCKS APPEAR TO BE FINE BUT THE DOOR HANDLE WILL NOT OPEN THE DOOR FORM THE INSIDE OR OUT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A HUGE SAFETY RISK AS EGRESS WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE IN A FIRE/CRASH. *TR
