Common problems & what to inspect

Based on 538 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2000 Toyota Camry, here are the most-reported problem areas — and exactly what to check before you buy.

💥 3 involved a crash 🔥 1 involved a fire 🚑 1 reported injury

Exterior Lighting 4 reports

🔍 Confirm all headlights, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights work, with no moisture inside the housings.

Electrical System 3 reports

🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.

Air Bags 3 reports

🔍 Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.

Engine 3 reports

🔍 Listen for knocks or ticking, check for leaks and blue/white exhaust smoke, and make sure it doesn't overheat. No check-engine light should be on.

Vehicle Speed Control 2 reports

🔍 Test cruise control and throttle response, and watch for any hesitation or unintended acceleration.

Seat Belts 1 report

🔍 Check that every belt latches, retracts and locks under a sharp tug, and that none are frayed.
