Common problems & what to inspect

Based on 83 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2006 GMC Yukon, here are the most-reported problem areas — and exactly what to check before you buy.

💥 2 involved a crash 🔥 1 involved a fire 🚑 1 reported injury

Electrical System 3 reports

🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.

Air Bags 3 reports

🔍 Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.

Service Brakes 3 reports

🔍 Brakes should feel firm and quiet — no grinding, pulsing or pulling. Check for an ABS light and uneven pad/rotor wear.

Steering 2 reports

🔍 Steering should be tight and centered — no play, clunks or wandering. Test at low and highway speed; listen for power-steering whine.

Structure 2 reports

🔍 Inspect for rust, fresh undercoating, mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps and any sign of prior collision or frame repair.

Power Train 1 report

🔍 Drive through every gear: watch for slipping, hard or delayed shifts, and shudder. Check for transmission/driveline leaks and noises.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

This is the 2nd GMC Yukon with a faulty drivetrain I've acquired in 3 years. Both occasions were directly after the vehicle had professional service done related to the faulty system. The Brake lines are not coded so the brake line rusted and when brakes got applied they burst causing accidents for no pressure and can’t stop. Air bags light stays on and will not go out. I have put new lights bulbs in truck but lights are still dim.

Driver side steering wheel safety air bag defective, warning light on dashboard says not functioning. Nervous about driving vehicle if there is a collision. Gas gauge misreads fuel level and check engine warning light keeps coming on. Ran out of fuel a few times. Has been checks problem keeps coming back on both.
