Common problems & what to inspect
Based on 7 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Nissan nv200, here are the most-reported problem areas — and exactly what to check before you buy.
🔍 Check for fuel or battery warnings, hard starts and stalling. On a hybrid/EV, confirm charging and range behave normally.
🔍 Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.
🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.
🔍 Listen for knocks or ticking, check for leaks and blue/white exhaust smoke, and make sure it doesn't overheat. No check-engine light should be on.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title — they must be identical.
- Cold-start the engine; listen for knocks and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.
- Test-drive through all gears at low and highway speed — no slipping, shudder or pulling.
- Confirm every warning light clears at startup (none should stay on).
- Check fluids — oil, coolant, transmission — for level, color and leaks.
- Look underneath for rust, fresh undercoating or signs of collision repair.
- Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

I understand there is a safety recall on other Nissan NV200's with regard to the ignition system. Where my van is not specifically listed in the recall, I have issues with the ignition switch turning and have to juggle it to get it into the start position. It does not instill confidence that I may not have a similar issue with my vehicl eand maybe it was mis…
NHTSA ODI #11677828AIR BAGS
The passenger side airbag deployed when I shut the door. My son was sitting in the seat. This incident could have been very harmful to my son. We had just had the airbag sensor repaired after waiting 6 months for it to arrive on back order. It was also replaced in 2021 under warranty, and in 2017 under a recall. The vehicle is currently at the dealership an…

NHTSA ODI #11605494AIR BAGS
We have a fleet of eighteen NV200s. The one that was listed was just repaired on 11/20/23. It had issues with the occupant air bag system. The issues with the air bag system are happening in other NV200s that we own. I believe there is a defect in these vans that could lead to them not operate as designed, causing injury or death. The other air bag issues we…
NHTSA ODI #11558905FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Vehicle keeps running out of gas, but the dash states there is a certain amount of gas before empty. Vehicle cutting off on express way is not safe. Recently found out that Nissan has a service bulletin about this issue.
