Flood car warning signs: how to spot water damage
Flood-damaged cars are often cleaned up and resold across state lines. Water wrecks electronics and causes corrosion that may not show for months. Watch for these warning signs:
- A musty, mildew or heavy air-freshener smell.
- Damp carpets, water lines or silt in the trunk, under seats, or in the spare-tire well.
- Rust on screws, door hinges, seat tracks or under the dashboard.
- Fogging or moisture inside headlights and tail lights.
- Mismatched or brand-new upholstery in an otherwise older car.
- Electrical gremlins โ flaky lights, infotainment, or warning lamps.
Most importantly, check the title history: flood and total-loss events are recorded in national databases. Enter the VIN on CarLogs and unlock the report to see flood, salvage and total-loss brands before you buy.
