How to check a used boat before you buy
Boats don't have VINs โ they have a Hull Identification Number (HIN), a 12-character code molded into the transom (usually upper-right) and recorded on the title. Larger and commercial vessels are also federally documented with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Before you buy, check: that the HIN on the hull matches the paperwork; the vessel's documented name, build year and status; outstanding liens; and any accident or total-loss history. Inspect for hull stress cracks, soft spots (rot), and engine hours.
On CarLogs you can look up a U.S. documented vessel by name or hull number to see its Coast Guard record โ free, with no owner personal information.
